Álvaro Oliveira received his degree in Electronic Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 1967, and his M.Sc. (1975) and Ph.D. (1979) in engineering from the University College of London. He spent 10 years doing research and teaching in academia (London, Lisbon and Lourenço Marques), 10 years in Industry, namely managing a large electronic manufacturing operation taking it from 100 to 1000 employees and creating a R&D Group with 50 engineers, designing and engineering products for major IT vendors (IBM, Control Data, Minolta, etc.) and developing a large cluster of suppliers developing and manufacturing components and materials in a collaborative environment.
Consultant to the Board of IT international companies (IBM, Ericsson, Vodafone, Timex, Marconi, Baan, etc.) and has been responsible for research studies supporting National (Advisor to the Minister of Industry) and European (Expert to different EU-DGS) policies. During the last fourteen years, he became an entrepreneur, creating several companies dedicated to research, consultancy and engineering. He is a member of the Games Developer Association, member of the Executive Board for the Portuguese Center for Graphics Computation, a member of the steering committee of CATE (Computer Aided Technology in Education), and an executive Board member of the Portuguese Association for Multimedia.
He has been a founding member of the European Network of Living Labs, has served as President for two mandates and is currently the International Chair of ENoLL and its President Emeritus.
He has coordinated a large number of International projects in Europe, Latin America, Africa and China and created more than 20 technology based companies.
He is also visiting professor at Aalto University in Helsinki and has published more than 140 papers.
